5 Books That Are As Good As A Therapy Session…
Books To Improve Your Mental & Emotional Wellbeing
We live in a hyperconnected world where being productive is prioritized over our mental and physical health.
Taking a break is considered a sign of weakness and taking care of your mental & physical health is equated to a lack of drive.
Fortunately, in the past few years, mental health and self-care are coming to the forefront of the mainstream media. And talking about mental health or going to therapy is encouraged. One of the ways you can take care of your mental health is by educating yourself about it.
Reading is considered one of the best ways of learning something new. With the new Work from home culture taking over our lives where the boundaries between professional and personal lives have almost been erased. We are far more vulnerable to mental burnout than ever before.
Most of us can’t go to therapy but many of us can read, and I’ve got some book recommendations that are actually as good as a therapy session.
1. The Vulnerable Man by Thomas Anderson
Genre: Memoir
Page Count: 201
Reading Level: Moderate
My Rating: 4.5/5
What is it all About?
We live in a society where we are supposed to be strong and mustn’t show our feelings or be vulnerable especially so for men. We hide behind a wall that acts as an emotional prison.
The message in this book is important for everyone but it might be of extra significance to men because men are not as used to understanding and sharing their feelings as women. And there are a lot of men out there who wished they could open up and share their thoughts and pain in a constructive way.
But society’s norms stop us from doing that. Therefore men must change those norms by talking openly about the way they feel and by showing their vulnerable side as well. Men owe it to themselves and to their mental health. Being vulnerable and sensitive is not the same thing as being weak. It is being human.
This book is a journey of the author of how he transformed himself by breaking mental patterns through self-exploration.
2. The Comfort Book by Matt Haig
Genre: Self-help
Page Count: 272
Reading Level: Easy
My Rating: 5/5
What is it all About?
“This book is as messy as life. It has a lot of short chapters and some longer ones. It contains lists, short phrases, quotes, case studies, and even an occasional recipe. You can read it how you want.
It is influenced by experiences but has moments of inspiration taken from anything ranging from quantum physics to ancient religions to philosophy to Instagram.
You can start at the beginning & end at the end or you can choose to read it the other way around as well. So there are no rules.”
But I’d like to guarantee one little thing here this book will make you feel good about yourself at the turn of every page.
The central theme of this book that I’ve noticed is Self-love, it is written with the sole intention of helping people who have lost their sense of self-worth, and helping them stand on their own two feet and start putting one step in front of others.
