5 Insanely Simple Ways to Detox Your Mind and Improve Your Mental Health
In today’s hyperconnected society, we are constantly being bombarded with more information than we can possibly process. We barely have time to relax and take a breath in our fast-paced lives. We are constantly looking for the next cool thing to be a part of and almost always have deadlines to meet. We want to stay on top of everything.
There is way too much coming at us. We find ourselves anxious, stressed, overwhelmed, and exhausted but we can’t put a finger on the reason why we are feeling this way. The constant influx of information and the 24 hours media coverage where every minute and insignificant detail is magnified make us more reactive and we are less likely to engage in deep thought or sober analysis.
Each of us has access to more information than we could ever reasonably use.
“A wealth of information creates a poverty of attention.” — Herbert Simon
All of this has disastrous effects on our mental health and our ability to think clearly. We are unable to filter out the insignificant from the essential. Our peace of mind is the price we pay for appearing to be the most knowledgeable person in the room, who has all the inside information, and who is aware of everything that is going on in everyone’s life.
Here in this article, I’ll be discussing 5 ways you can detoxify your mind, which will assist you to think clearly, reduce your mental stress, and bring back your peace of mind.
1. Schedule Time Away From Technology
This is a no-brainer. Our smartphones are constantly going off with their endless notifications that don’t matter and somehow we pay attention to almost everything in real time. There is a reason why we are not able to focus on a single task for more than 5 minutes. Social media apps have wired our brains to crave distraction.
We appear to be controlled by the technology all around us. We interrupt our work in order to respond to pointless notifications. And after engaging in this activity repeatedly throughout the course of the day we accomplish nothing noteworthy, and yet end up feeling exhausted.
The best way to improve your personal effectiveness, productivity, and mental health is by scheduling some time away from your smartphone and other devices. Set some healthy boundaries, and do not respond to useless notifications immediately.
It doesn’t mean that you don’t value other people it just means that you value your mental health and time above everything else and refuse to be a slave to your smartphone.
Take a walk without your smartphone, spend time with your loved ones, and read what you prefer.
2. Reflect And Focus On The Bigger Picture
We lack the time to look back, take stock, and recognize how far we’ve come because we are so preoccupied with our daily lives. We become so distracted by the small details that we forget about the greater picture and the original motivation for doing what we’re doing.
Operating with long-term goals will bring you immense clarity and resolve. Whenever you catch yourself overwhelmed with everyday chaos. Take a pause for a few minutes and
-Think about what’s important to you.
-Think about what’s actually going on.
-Think about the reason why you are doing this.
When you introduce a sense of purpose to any mundane activity and connect it to the bigger picture, you’ll find the necessary enthusiasm to accomplish it with ease. This will inspire you to move forward.
Reevaluate your progress and make the required adjustments to the various goals while continuously learning from your past mistakes, adjusting, and refining your initial goal.
3. Declutter Your Physical Space
The clutter in your physical space sometimes triggers stress and anxiety in your mental space without you being aware of it. When things in your workplace or your home are scattered it is more likely that your focus is scattered too.
The things around us demand our attention so if you are someone who considers attention to be your most valuable currency then I would advise you to organize or declutter your workplace or home to improve your focus.
Decluttering can also be a way of taking your focus away from your anxious thoughts, it will feel like a welcome break and in that break, you are optimizing your environment for better focus. As soon as you organize the things around you it is more likely that you’ll feel more organized and a lot more in control of your mental space as well.
4. Start Working Out
The easiest, most inexpensive, and most effective way of detoxifying your mind is by physically moving your body. It could be as simple as stretching yourself between work breaks for 5–10 minutes, taking a walk or running without your smartphone, or doing a proper 30–40 minutes workout 4–5 times a week(highly recommended).
Here, the first step is crucial; do it slowly and build from there. Our mind easily gets overwhelmed with our larger-than-life goals, and the promises we make to ourselves about the grand way we’re going to change everything.
Our brain is programmed to resist change, but by taking small steps you effectively rewire your nervous system. These small actions take very little time or money and require minimum reverses of your willpower. So your brain is saying: hey!! This change is so tiny that it’s no big deal. No need to get worked up.
According to Cdc.gov exercise can help you think more clearly, learn new things, solve problems, and maintain emotional equilibrium. Both memory and anxiety or despair can be lessened by it. But to enjoy the advantages, you don’t need to be an expert in fitness. Physical activity of any intensity is beneficial to detoxify your mind.
5. Start Writing
How you write is much less important than why are you writing. Writing is a great exercise to detoxify your mind. Instead of caring about the emotional baggage around in our heads or hearts, we can put it down on paper or we can write digitally as well. The idea is to write it doesn’t matter which tools you use to write.
There is no wrong or right way of doing it. The point is just to do it. Writing is a way to bring your thoughts into the real world.
Writing aids you in:
- Gaining awareness of reality
- Reducing stress and anxiety
- Making better judgments
- Assist us in knowing ourselves and our thought patterns.
Try setting a timer of 5–10 minutes and start writing everything that is bothering you.
